Matt Newton

Keyboard/Piano

MATT NEWTON is a Toronto based pianist, composer and educator. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto Jazz Program and has attended the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music where he studied with world renowned trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas, and pianist Deron Johnson (Miles Davis). Newton’s critically acclaimed debut album (featuring Petr Cancura) was included in Paul J. Youngman’s list of Favourite Jazz CD’s of 2009. In response to his second album,Within Reach, Dan Bilawsky of All About Jazz had this to say: ”Newton doesn’t simply play piano. He expertly shapes phrases, lets notes pool together, creates rich and luxuriant arcs of sound, and balances the yin and yang that exists within these songs. His playing exudes warmth and comfort, yet it remains unpredictable.”
Matt is a member of the Harley Card Quintet and has performed along side such respected artists as Melissa Lauren, Petr Cancura, Kevin Turcotte, Ashley St. Pierre, Ernesto Cervini, Chris Gale, Nick Fraser, Rebecca Hennessy, Allison Au, Tim Shia, among many others.

TIM SHIA (DRUMS) Whether it be Holly Cole or Donne Roberts; Rich Underhill or Sarah Slean, Tim Shia has had the good fortune of playing with a host of Juno, Polaris and Grammy Award nominated musicians over the years.
At the same time, his own group, the Worst Pop Band Ever, has packed festivals and clubs from St John’s to Vancouver; NYC to Taipei. Tim has scored and licensed music for film and television including work for CBC, the the NFB and even a pilot for Disney.He also hosted a radio show on JazzFm 91.1 and Paul Chin’s Istolethesoul FM internet radio. Tim is a Dream Cymbals and Headhunters Drumsticks artist.

Gord Mowat

Bass

GORD MOWAT (BASS) is a bassist and composer based in Toronto. He has toured in 5 countries with the juno-nominated Elizabeth Shepherd Trio, appearing in Canada’s best-known jazz venues with Shepherd as well as the Toronto group Worst Pop Band Ever.An active sideman in the singer/songwriter world, Gord plays Canada’s favourite folk festivals and venues with acts like the legendary Fred Penner and Toronto folk/blues icon Ken Whiteley. Gord played bass on Whiteley’s recent recording Calm in the Eye of the Storm (2019) and another soon-to-be-released album from Ken Whiteley. Gord also played on Manitoba singer/songwriter Sam Baardman’s 2022 release Marsh Radio, as well as its follow-up Athabasca (2023). Gord toured England, USA, and Canada for many years with Manitoban folk-pop quintet Dust Poets, appearing on their two latest recordings World at Large and Lovesick Town.Gord Mowat’s Skeleton Crew is a jazz quintet that showcases Mowat’s original instrumental compositions. The band’s self-titled debut was released in 2018 to critical acclaim and the group has performed in Toronto at the Rex, the Emmet Ray, and the Tranzac in support of it.

Neil Hendry

Guitar

NEIL HENDRY (GUITAR) is a happy member of Toronto’s So Long Seven and enjoys playing with Chloe Watkinson, Rhonda Stakich, as well as his own various solo guitar ventures. This talented quartet creates a delicious blend of jazz, classical music, blues, folk, and traditional music from India, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The result, which brings together cultural influences from all over the world, is both joyful and striking.
has played guitar for Evita, Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret, and an awesome Elvis Presley review show in Port Perry.
